Hoopin' for Hope

Hoopin' for Hope

On February 15th Parkland College and Illinois Central College women's basketball teams faced off in the "Hoopin' for Hope" game dedicated to cancer awareness. Both teams wore special shirts to help promote awareness and support for those in a fight against cancer. These special t-shirts were designed by ICC point guard Brandi Fier. The two teams combined to donate $1,240 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Peoria.  The two teams raised money from admissions gate sales, and selling the t-shirt designed for the game. Before the game started, both teams presented a check to Susan G. Komen Foundation board president, Nick Esser.

Susan G. Komen was born in Peoria Illinois in 1943. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 33 years old and lost her fight three years later. Susan's sister, Nancy Brinker, believed that Susan's outcome may have been better had patients known more about cancer and its treatments. Nancy promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to educate people about cancer, specifically breast cancer which lead to the creation of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The foundation has invested more than $2.6 billion in research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs about breast cancer in more than 60 countries. There efforts have helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 38 percent, between 1989 and 2014.

Illinois Central College was able to stop Parkland's 10 game winning streak during the "Hoopin' for Hope" game. The Cougars achieved a strong win over Parkland, 81-63. Information about the game was given by Parkland College's Athletic Director Rod Lovett. For more information on the Susan G. Komen Foundation please visit http://ww5.komen.org/
