Winter Haven, FL – The Delta College baseball team started their week-long stay in the sun of Florida by dropping both games on day one of the Russ Matt Invitational by the scores of 8-2 and 23-2. The losses drop their record to 1-3-1 on the young season.
In game one, Delta squared off against Frederick CC (NJCAA DII) out of Maryland. Both teams scored a single run in the first and second innings with Delta plating theirs via a passed ball and an RBI groundout by Nick Johnson. In the top of the sixth with the score 4-2 in favor of the Cougars, Delta committed an error that led to three unearned runs and pushed the score to 7-2. A solo homerun for Frederick in the seventh completed the scoring.
Joe Tany (0-1) took the loss going 4.1 innings and giving up four earned runs while striking out six. Johnson led the offense with a hit and an RBI.
Game two saw Delta with a 4-2 deficit heading in to the sixth before Lincoln Land CC (NJCAA DII) ripped off six runs to make it 10-2. The Loggers scored three more in both the seventh and eighth innings before plating seven in the ninth for the final 23-2 score. The loss was by the largest deficit in Delta baseball history.
Alex Snider (0-1) took the loss on the bump for Delta, throwing four innings and giving up three earned runs with five K's. Matt Fisher led the Pioneer bats with two hits.
"We were in both games late and just ran into a wall for a number of reasons," said eighth year head coach Danny Smith. "But, we don't have time to figure it out right now. We just need to keep moving forward."
Delta will play MCCAA West Division foe Glen Oaks at 9am tomorrow before facing off against Lake County at 12:30. The games will be played at the Chain of Lakes Stadium.
