Lakers Take Three Today

The Iowa Lakes softball team won three games on their second day at THE Spring Games. The Lakers started off the day with a 13-4 victory over Niagara County Community College, where they racked up 14 hits in the game. Game two was highlighted by a 4-3 win over #15 Triton College. A walk off Bryn Bohmann homerun gave the Lakers the11-3 six inning win over Spoon River College in game three. The Lakers are now 9-2 on the year.

GAME 1: 13 (ILCC), 4 (NCCC)

Karisa Hernandez started game one with a leadoff walk and stole second to get herself into scoring position with Bryn Bohmann up to bat. Bohmann doubled off the fence to score Hernandez and then trotted home on an Eliya Johnson homerun.

The score remained 3-0, until the third inning when Bohmann reached on a single and scored on another Johnson homerun. With two outs, Baylee O'Donnell singled and crossed the plate on a Kaitlyn Halsband homerun. Niagara got themselves on the board with a solo-homerun of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Niagara scored another run on a single, double, and a passed ball.

With the score now 7-2, Iowa Lakes quickly answered with a Bohmann leadoff homerun in the top of the fifth. Kaitlin Roundy hit a one out single and was pinch ran for by Amanda Franke. Franke advanced to second on a Jayda Staige groundout. Franke used her speed to go from second to home on a passed ball, giving the Lakers a 9-2 lead.

The Lakers extended their lead in the top of the seventh, putting up four runs. Olivia Funk leadoff with a double, and scored on Bohmann's second homerun of the game. Paige Grafton followed with a walk and got herself to second by going on a ball in the dirt. Brielle Hogan singled and advanced to second on the throw. Staige hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Grafton and advancing herself to second on a run down. Halsband reached on a Niagara error, which also allowed Staige to score from second and giving the Lakers a 13-2 lead. Niagara put up a fight in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on a double, a Laker error, and a single.

Baylee O'Donnell picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing two runs, 1 earned, in 3.2 innings pitched. She gave up six hits, while walking one and striking out two. Jayda Staige pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, zero earned, on two hits, one walk, and one Niagara strikeout. At the plate, Bryn Bohmann was a perfect 4-4 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Eliya Johnson and Kaitlin Roundy each added two hits of their own in the game.

GAME 2: 4 (ILCC), 3 (TC)

The Lakers came up with a big win in game two, taking down #15 Triton College. They started off the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Chase and Bohmann drew back to back walks. A Johnson double scored Chase and put runners at second and third with Roundy up to bat. She singled up the middle to score both runners and give the Lakers the early 3-0 lead.

Iowa Lakes capitalized on a Triton error, when Franke reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Back to back strikeouts brought Chase up with two outs. She quickly doubled down the line to score the Lakers final run of the game.

The Tritons scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth when they walked and had back to back homeruns.

Eliya Johnson picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on two hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Lexi Chase also pitched in the game, giving up no runs on two hits and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched. Amanda Franke led the Lakers at the plate, going 2-3. Lexi Chase added a hit and two walks, while Roundy drove in two RBI's.

GAME 3: 11 (ILCC), 3 (SRC)

Chase got things started in the final game of the day with a one out single. Then the Lakers got the bats started, scoring five runs on two outs. With Chase at second, she brought herself around to score, advancing on two Spoon River passed balls. Johnson walked and advanced to second on a Spoon River error off a ground ball from Roundy. Allison McCabe doubled down the right field line, scoring Johnson and advancing Roundy to third. Paige Grafton followed with a double of her own, which was quickly followed by a Brielle Hogan single to put the Lakers up 5-0.

The Lakers got themselves into a jam early, allowing the Snappers to load the bases with two singles and a walk. MacKenna Jones went to work and got the next two batters to strikeout swinging. Iowa Lakes tacked on two more runs, when Chase doubled and scored on a Bohmann single. Three straight walks brought Bohmann around to score and give the Lakers a 7-0 lead.

Spoon River got on the board in the third, scoring on two singles and two doubles. With Chase in to pitch, she retired the next three batters in order.

The score remained 7-3, until the Lakers put up four in the bottom of the sixth to finish the game early. Franke led off with a single and stole second, before advancing to third on a Hernandez single. Hernandez followed suit with a stolen base of her own and both runners came around to score on a Chase double. Bohmann hit her third homerun of the day to complete the 11-3 win.

Lexi Chase picked up the win for the Lakers, allowing zero runs on three hits and six strikeouts. MacKenna Jones allowed three earned runs on six hits, one walk, and three Spoon River strikeouts. Bryn Bohmann was 2-3 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Lexi Chase was 3-4 with two runs batted in and three runs scored.

The Lakers will finish out their trip by playing two games tomorrow, March 16th. They will take on #18 Madison College at 12:30 PM (EST) and Highland Community College at 2:45 PM (EST)
