Volleyball Posts 3-1 Mark at Kirkwood Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Highland volleyball team hit in the court last Friday and Saturday in their third tournament of the season this time traveling to Cedar Rapids, IA and faced off against some tough opponents coming home with a 3-1 record in four matches at the Kirkwood Invitational.

Action started rolling on Friday afternoon for the Scotties at the Kirkwood Invitational as the seventh ranked Scotties took the NJCAA DII #13 team in the country Lincoln Land in their first match of the tournament. Highland worked past Lincoln Land with a strong first set winning it 25-15 and went on to take the match in three sets winning sets two and three in a bit tighter fashion 25-20, 25-21.

Next up was a matchup on Friday night against the host of the Tournament, Kirkwood giving the Scotties another contest against a ranked opponent as Kirkwood checks in at #13 in the latest NJCAA DII polls. Down late in set one Highland battled back and took the first set 25-21 but Kirkwood had an answer tying the match at one set each by winning set two 16-25. Scotties weren't rattled after losing the second set as they responded to finish the match strong and win a pair of tight sets 25-23 and 25-19 in set three and four, respectively winning the match in four sets.

After a 2-0 day on Friday the action continued on Saturday for Highland at the Kirkwood Invitational as they faced their third ranked foe that Tournament this time playing second ranked Parkland College. While Highland hung tough in the contest the Scotties fell in three sets to Parkland 23-25, 13-25, 20-25.

Highland bounced back from the loss to Parkland by wrapping up their Tournament action in Cedar Rapids with a strong three set win over Illinois Central snatching the victory 25-23, 25-10, 25-14.

With the 3-1 showing at the Kirkwood Invitational the Scotties are now 11-2 on the season overall with all 11 wins coming in Tournament action. Highland turns their attention back to KJCCC play on Wednesday, September 12th when they travel to Concordia, KS to take on Cloud County.

Match One: #7 Highland won 3-0 vs. #13 Lincoln Land (25-15, 25-20, 25-21)

It was a balanced attack against Lincoln Land for the Scotties as Katie Pearson set the offense in motion with 34 assists leading to five ladies registering six kills or more in the match. Nine kills by Emma Cohalla and Cajia Allen paced the team while they both also had a pair of aces in the win. Myla Turner led the team defensively with 15 digs as Pearson chipped in nine.

Match Two: #7 Highland won 3-1 vs. #13 Kirkwood (25-21, 26-25, 25-23, 25-19)

The Scotties had plenty of eye popping numbers in the four set win against the host of the Tournament, Kirkwood. Turner led the Scotties again on the back row registering 20 digs for her third 20+ dig performance of the season, while Pearson, Kirsten Johnson and Allen all also had double figure digs finishing with 12, 11 and 10, respectively. For Pearson she added 39 assists and a kill in the contest, while Allen notched her fifth double-double of the season recording 11 kills in the match. Johnson with her 11 digs moved into third place all-time in career digs at Highland with 693 after the match with Kirkwood. Cohalla led the team in kills in the match with 13 her eighth double kill performance this season.

Match Three: #7 Highland lost 0-3 to #2 Parkland (23-25, 13-25, 25-20)

Leading Highland in the tough loss to Parkland was Cohalla with nine kills, while Savannah Griesemer and Hannah Williams each recorded seven kills. Turner once again led the Scottie defense registering 14 digs, while both Pearson and Johnson each had nine digs. Pearson also finished the match with 28 assists. While Griesemer had a solid match adding four digs and a solo block to her seven kills.

Match Four: #7 Highland won 3-0 vs. Illinois Central (25-23, 25-10, 25-14)

Just like the first match of the Tournament the wealth was spread out offensively for the Highland as five ladies had five or more kills in the win over Illinois Central. Cohalla and Allen led the charge each with nine kills, while Lee Sexton had eight. Pearson finished with 25 assists, two aces, nine digs and a solo block. Turner tallied 19 digs on the back row and Allen registered 11 digs in the win.
