The Lady Red Hawks traveled to Ohio to compete in the 2014 Owens Community College Labor Day Tournament. In the first game of the day on Friday, August 29th, Catawba Valley faced Parkland College, who is ranked number 1 in the NJCAA polls. The Red Hawks fought hard, but the middle attack of the Parkland offense was too much for the Red Hawks to handle and they dropped three straight sets 25-21, 25-21, and 25-13.
Aimee Cloninger led in kills for the Red Hawks with 12 followed by Anna Henderson with 8 and Rachel Anderson with 3. Aimee Cloninger and Katelyn Houser had 10 digs each for the match and Madison Pogue added 9 digs and 17 assists. Serving was aggressive for Catawba Valley with Hannah Griffin leading the way with 3 followed by Madison Pogue with 2 and Rachel Anderson and Lyndsey Detter with 1 ace each. Hannah Griffin and Rachel Anderson each had a block solo.
The Red Hawks overall record is 2-1 and their conference record is 0-0.

The Lady Red Hawks won the afternoon match on Friday, August 29, 2014 as they took on the "Skippers" of St. Clair County Community College in their second match at the Owens CC Labor Day Invitational. CVCC defeated St. Clair 3-1 with scores 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21. Catawba Valley dominated the first set scoring on 11 of 24 kill attempts with no hitting errors. The Red Hawks slipped in set two, but regained momentum in the third set to clinch control of the match. Leading the way for CVCC was outside hitter Aimee Cloninger who had a season high 19 kills for the match as well as 13 digs and 2 service aces. Also contributing in the kill category was sophomore co-captain Anna Henderson and freshman outside hitter Rachel Anderson who both had 9 kills for the match. Hannah Griffin added 6 kills. Defense was controlled for the Red Hawks by Katelyn Houser who had 22 digs for the match followed by Rachel Anderson with 17 digs. Madison Pogue had 33
assists for the match as well as 2 aces. Lyndsey Detter led the team in the serving category with 3 aces for the match. The Red Hawks defended the net well with 12.5 total team blocks. Anna Henderson had 4.5 blocks; Tiffany Brooks added 2.5 and Aimee Cloninger had 2.

Catawba Valley faced Grand Rapids Community College in their first match of the day on Saturday, August 30th. Predicted to be a tough match-up between the number 10 ranked Grand Rapids and number 18 ranked CVCC, the fans were not disappointed. The Red Hawks battled through the first set, but fell short, 25-22. In the second set, CVCC had an impressive 14 kills, but it was not enough and the Raiders came out on top 26-24. The Hawks rebounded in the third set and refused to be swept by Grand Rapids winning set three, 26-24. However, unforced errors in the final set were too much for Catawba Valley to overcome and they lost set four, 25-18.
Offense for the Red Hawks was led once again by Aimee Cloninger with 15 kills for the match. Tiffany Brooks had an impressive 8 kills and 4.5 blocks against the Raiders, her best statistical match of the year so far. Also contributing in the kill category was Rachel Anderson and Hannah Griffin with 7 kills each. Anna Henderson added 6 kills for the match and freshman Emily Horn came in and provided a much needed offensive boost with 5 kills for the match. Libero Katelyn Houser had 23 digs against the Raiders followed by Madison Pogue with 19, Rachel Anderson with 14 and Aimee Cloninger with 12. Madison Pogue controlled the offense with 37 assists for the match and also added 2 aces.

Game Notes:
In their last match of the Owens Express Invitational Tournament, the Red Hawks faced host school Owens for an afternoon match-up. CVCC started out strong and won the first set 25-23 before losing focus and dropping sets two and three 15-25 and 21-25. Refusing to accept defeat, Catawba Valley regained momentum and fought to a set four 26-24 victory, forcing the deciding fifth set. In the final set, CVCC jumped to an early 4-0 lead before Owens came back and took the lead 10-7. The two teams battled back and forth to a final score of 19-17 with the Lady Red Hawks securing the match.
Aimee Cloninger was unstoppable and once again led the offense with 16 kills and 3 aces. Anna Henderson had a season high 15 kills for the match as well as a season high 6 total blocks. Also contributing offensively was Rachel Anderson with 6 kills and Tiffany Brooks and Hannah Griffin with 4 kills each. Also breaking new ground was Katelyn Houser who had a season high 35 digs for the match followed by Rachel Anderson who had an equally amazing dig total of 24 for the match. Madison Pogue led the assists category with 29 assists and Katelyn Houser put up 3. In addition to Aimee Cloninger's 3 aces, Madison Pogue, Rachel Anderson, Lyndsey Detter and Katelyn Houser each contributed 1 ace for the match.
The Red Hawks overall record is 4-2 and their conference record is 0-0.

Catawba Valley is home again on Tuesday, September 2nd against Rockingham Community College at 6:00 and will host the Region X Extravaganza over the weekend of September 5-6th.
