Skippers Split Day Two at McHenry

Rockford, IL -- The SC4 Skippers volleyball team continued their opening weekend today in Rockford, IL for the McHenry College Opening Weekend Tournament. Continuing their tough schedule, Skippers started the morning against the Parkland College Cobras who were dubbed #1 in the NJCAA Preseason Poll. After the 0-3 loss, Skippers fought back to win against the Oakton Community College Owls, 3-1. 

MATCH ONE: #1 Parkland College 3, SC4 0 (15-25, 15-25, 17-25)

Parkland began set on strong, with a six point lead. The Skippers battled for points against the top team in the nation, but Parkland finished strong. Set two had a similar tune. Set three, the Skippers turned it up, and went point for point early, even leading the Cobras for the first time in the match at 3-2. SC4 would go on to lead again at 5-4 and 6-4 before the Cobras went on a run. In the end, Skippers fell 0-3. 

Quinn Peterson (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) and Heather Broski (Harrison Twp., Mich/Regina) paced the Skippers offense with 7 kills each. Olivia Jovanovich (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) led the defense with 12 digs.  Joeleen Gaffney (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) and Miyana Dishroon (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) tallied 13 and 8 assists respectively.

 

MATCH TWO: SC4 3, Oakton Community College 1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-19)

Skippers came out stronger in game two of the day, but let Oakton make their way back in to take set one. After that, Skippers played with fire, taking the next three sets straight, talling 32 kills, 12 aces and 12 blocks. 

Leading the Skippers offense were Miyana Dishroon (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) with 8 kills and 5 service aces, Heather Broski (Harrison Twp., Mich/Regina) with 7 kills, and Christina Bohm (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and Allie Foucher (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) with 6 kills each. Defensively, the Skippers were led by Dishroon with 12 digs and 5 block assists, followed by Quinn Peterson (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) with 11 digs and 3 block assists. Bohm rounded out block leaders with 7 assists. Joeleen Gaffney (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) led the team in assists with 18. 

 

UP NEXT: Skippers Quad #1 

Skippers have their eyes on the home opener next Wednesday, Aug. 25, where they will host Rochester College JV, Terra State Community College, and Lansing Community College at 4, 6, and 8 p.m. respectively. Fans will be allowed, and can purchase tickets online or at the door. SC4 Campus COVID/mask protocols will be enforced.
