Highland Men Grab Two Wins at JCCC Tournament Moving to 11-0 on Season

The exceptional start to the 2018-19 season has continued for the Highland Men's basketball as the Scotties grabbed two more wins to move to 11-0 on the season by beating Washburn JV 107-78 and topping John Wood Community College 88-63 in neutral site games at Johnson County Community College.

Another strong shooting performance along with dominance on the boards led the Scotties past Washburn JV on Friday. Highland dropped 60 points in the first half and held a convincing 60-38 lead at intermission over the Ichabods. Scotties capped the game shooting 57.1% from the floor and made 11 three pointers giving the team now three games this season with 10 or more three's, while Highland was also dominate on the boards out rebounding Washburn JV 50-26.

Sophomore, Taiveyhon Mason once again left his imprint on the game pacing the Scotties with 26 points on 9-11 shooting and 6-8 from the floor. Mason filled the rest of the stat sheet nicely with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. Luiz Machado Jr chipped in 19 points draining four three-pointers, while Andre Jackson had his best game of the season with a double-double notching 17 points and 10 rebounds. Malik Cushon gave the Scotties four guys in double figures as he tallied 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

On Saturday the Scotties squared off with John Wood at JCCC and trailed early over the first four minutes of the contest but an 11-0 run for Highland pushed them to a 20-12 advantage with 13 and half minutes left in the first half. Scotties by halftime expanded that lead to 51-24 using an 18-5 run over the final six and half minutes of the half to hold that advantage. In the second half the Scotties added to their lead and snatched the 88-63 win over John Wood.

The guys continued to shot well from the floor posting a 55.7% shooting percentage from the floor while also going 10-17 from three-point range. A quartet of guys were in double figures again for Highland with Jaquan Daniels and Mason each tallying 18 points. Daniels added seven rebounds and six steals in the win, while Mason had five assists. DJ Doakes added a career best 16 points going 4-4 from three-point range, while Machado Jr chipped in 10 points.

Highland continues the season on Tuesday, December 4th at home as they host Graceland University JV for the second matchup against the Hornets this season; tip-off is set for 7:00pm. Scotties beat Graceland JV earlier this season 90-39 at the Scottie Classic back on November 17th.
